GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR FACE-LIFT AND EYELID SURGERY
  1. No intake of white refined sugar in any form for two (2) weeks prior to surgery. This includes cakes, ice-cream and cookies. If you are not sure, ask.
  2. No aspirin or aspirin containing medication such as Empirin, Anacin, Excedrin, or Bufferin.
  3. Itching of eyes may be relieved with a CLEAN wash cloth soaked in ice-water or cold milk, if necessary.
  4. Hair may be washed with baby shampoo one day after ALL DRESSINGS are removed A COOL hairdryer may be used to dry hair. Shampoo the day before surgery.
  5. No tub baths or showers for five (5) days (you may sponge bath).
  6. All hair tinting should be done ahead of surgery date. Hair may be tinted approximately one month after surgery. Do not have a short haircut prir to surgery; it is not necessary.
  7. No stretching of skin in surgical areas. No pulling of eyelids or marked turning of the head for six weeks. Apply bland oil to all suture lines after head dressing is removed.
  8. No thermally hot foods or hard chewing. No alcoholic beverages for ten (10) days after procedure or two (2) weeks before surgery.
  9. No swimming for one month, no diving for two months.
  10. Lubricate lips with Vaseline or cold cream if necessary after surgery.
  11. No direct sun-bathing for two weeks prior to surgery and six weeks after.
  12. Note your office appointments for dressing removal and post-operative care.
  13. Please wear easily removable, comfortable clothing e.g. shirts which open down the front, nothing to be removed over the head, on the day of surgery.
  14. Please telephone the office the day before your surgery to confirm your admit time (213) 278-3223
  15. On the day of your pre-operative visit you will be given prescriptions; these are to be filled prior to the date of surgery.

  7. Hair may be washed five days after surgery and dried with a cool drier. Wash hair the day prior to surgery.
  8. Please wear easily removable, comfortable clothing e.g. shirts which open down the front, nothing to be removed over the head, on the day of surgery.

Rhinoplasty (Nose Surgery)

Before the Procedure
  1. One week before the Procedure, try to limit the intake of white refined sugar.
  2. Do not take any aspirin, Advil, or Motrin one week prior to surgery. This includes any products that contain these medications. You may use Tylenol.
  3. No alcoholic beverages for one week prior to surgery.
  4. Start arnica (over the counter) for five days prior to surgery.
  5. Wear clothes to the surgery that go easily over the head.
  6. Do not Eat or Drink Anything (including water) for eight hours prior to surgery.
After the Procedure
  1. Ice, ice, ice!!! As much as possible for the first 48 hours after surgery.
  2. Use Vaseline or lip balm o lubricate the lips.
  3. Continue arnica for five days or as long as bruising persists.
  4. Start antibiotic therapy and continue for five days after the surgery.
  5. You may switch to Tylenol if your prescription pain medication is no longer needed. Do not take any aspirin, Advil, or Motrin for two weeks after surgery.
  6. Do not consume alcoholic beverages for one week after surgery.
  7. No steaming hot foods for ten days after surgery.
  8. No showers or tub baths for five days after surgery.
  9. No heavy lifting or physical activity for 10-14 days after surgery.
  10. No swimming for one month, no diving for two months.
  11. Avoid Striking or bumping the nose.
  12. Once the telfa is removed, the tip of the nose can be cleaned with antibacterial ointment and a Q-tip.
  13. If you had work done to the bridge of your nose: Once the cast is removed, you may wash your face with luke warm water and mild soap. Do not rest anything including glasses on the bridge of the nose for 6 weeks. Wear sunscreen one bridge of nose for one year after surgery.
  14. No blowing your nose from 10-15 days.

  8. Obtain a sweat-band, headache-band etc. to wear over ears as protection when dressings are removed. Wear the band at night and as often as possible during the day.
  9. Use softest, probably oldest, pillow that you have.

Before the Procedure

  2. Do not take any aspirin, Advil, or Motrin one week prior to surgery. This includes any products that contain these medications such as Excedrin, Bufferin, and many over the counter cold/flu preparations. If you want to take an over-the-counter pain medication you can take Tylenol both prior and after the surgery.
  3. No alcoholic beverages for one week prior to surgery.
  4. Start arnica (over-the-counter) for five days prior to surgery.
  5. Wear clothes to the surgery that go easily over the head.
  6. Do not Eat or Drink Anything (including water) for eight hours before the time of your surgery.
After the Procedure
  1. Ice the neck often for the first 48 hours after surgery.
  2. Continue arnica for five days or as long as bruising persists.
  3. Start antibiotic therapy for five days after the surgery.
  4. Do not take aspirin, Advil, or Motrin for two weeks after the surgery(Tylenol is okay.
  5. Do not consume alcoholic beverages for 10-14 days after the surgery
  6. Consume only liquids after the surgery. This is VERY IMPORTANT!! Examples of things to drink include smoothies(without citrus or seeds), ensure or other protein drink, Gatorade, etc. Things you cannot drink include citrus juices (may burn) and carbonated drinks.
  7. After your first post-op visit you may be advanced to soft foods. These include eggs, mashed potatoes without the skins, (NO RICE! It has sharp edges.) and soups with noodles. Make sure you are cleared by MD ir NP first! If you are not sure a food is okay to eat, ask first.
  8. No heavy exercise until two weeks after the procedure.
